My chicken has been sitting in the same spot all day long and is panting

Newbie Chicken owner here.

A little back story:

I have six EE hens, at nine or ten weeks old. Last night, I noticed Butterfly was sleeping on the ground, while all the other five were piled on the highest roost. I guess Butterfly is at the bottom of the pecking order--I've never seen her go into a scuffle with another chicken. She's very passive.

The past week Butterfly has been out in the run pecking with the chickens, having a great time. She was always the first to come out of the run in the morning when I would let them all out. Lately though I noticed she was coming out later than the others, with less energy.

This morning, I noticed her laying down in the middle of the coop's floor, wings spread out and dipping her head, then bringing it up to pant like she was hot or something. It's not hot out-- 60's/50's. She had one leg sticking out from under her and her entire body was heaving slightly.

Wondering what was wrong, I petted her, and she didn't flee like she normally would have. I offered her food from my hand, placing it right under her beak, but she did not take it. I picked her up and examined her but I couldn't find any injuries. As I went to put her down, she flapped her wings promisingly, but as soon as she touched the ground she was the same way I originally found her--spread out, panting, one leg sticking out. I checked Butterfly when I got home from school and she hadn't moved at all--not even changed positions, her wing the exact same orientation as when I had left that morning.

What could be the matter with my wonderful Butterfly? How can I treat her if she's sick?

Thanks in advance!

do you have or can you please post a picture of her. does the one leg that sticks out have paralysis? just by sound and not by sight it sounds as it could be Marek's disease. I certainly hope I am wrong here. can she walk at all? is she completely paralyzed? a picture would be a big help .

Thanks so much for responding! I took a picture:

I realized actually two legs are sticking out--Butterfly has been doing a split all day long!

This morning when I was holding her my mom tickled her feet, and Butterfly kicked and flapped, so I don't think she's paralyzed. Also when they were babies they were vaccinated for Mareks disease. However, I am getting quite worried as she has not eaten or drank at all today, even when I offered food and water right under her beak.

Thanks again for responding! All help is much appreciated!

Its looks like meraks...i am very sorry this is happening to her!! You should seperate her ASAP from the other chickens.

Are you sure?? She got her Mareks vaccination when she was little! Are they not 100% guaranteed for working? Thank you for responding.

Im pretty sure..but i am not a vet..but iv seen may posts on BYC about meraks and seen chickens with it..i dont know anything about the meracks vaccination ,sorry. Iv never bought vaccinated birds. the legs sticking out like that are a classic sign.

Okay, I understand. We separated her from the others, and she has now been in that position for 24 hours... Any ideas for treatment? I tried force-feeding her water, but I don't think she drank much.

You can try giving her vitamins, like a poultry drench. You can buy it at a feed store like tractor supply. But i would put her down. I know its hard but if shes not eating or drinking, then she is slowly dieing...
Where did you buy your chicks from?

Also, just because your chicks where vaccinated for meraks, dosnt mean the bird will be meraks free. If the bird carries meraks and was vaccinated for it, the bird can still die from meraks... I dont know if that sounds right..but i urge you to look up meraks on BYC's. There are pages upon pages about this diesease!.

looks like classic Marek's to me.sad truth is over 5 %of vaccinated birds still get mareks disease. many on this forum have delt or is dealing with this disease. I suggest you create a new post about mareks and I'm sure many people will help you move forward from here now that your flock is exposed. they are very educated on Marek's and can be of a great help! as I understand it Marek's disease is a very prolific highly contagious airborne disease. however because your flock was exposed does not mean they will all fall ill. it does mean they are ALL carriers though. so if you bring a new bird in it MUST be vaccinated and had ample time for immunity to set it. which I'm not sure of exact time. I believe 2 to 3 weeks after vaccine. the ones who deal with this can answer all your questions. so I urge you to make a new thread. so they can help. and post this picture. they will know how to deal with Marek's being on your land and help with your bird.I've even seen people make a splint to help hold the bird up while its going though this. people on this forum have a wealth of information on Marek's this is why I urge you to start a new thread so they can help. I wish you the best and I wish I could be of more help! so sorry about your bird. I wish you the best. your best weapon right now is education. so learn as much as you can on Marek's. it will really help. God bless
