I have this 3 day old quail chick with one puffy crusty leaky eye. I raise a lot of chicks and never have had any sort of disease or infection problems so I'm scratching my head as to what this is and why it happened. It might be of note that a seeming healthy chick died in this brooder at about 1 day old but it hadn't been dead long before I removed it, I had handled that chick in the morning and chalked it's death up to it being a bit of a runt and me cleaning its crusty butt and whatnot, now I'm not so sure.

Only the one eye looks bad, the other looks totally healthy. His behavior is that of a normal healthy chick.

As stated by Nichrome, it could be from another chick pecking at the eye. Or it is possible that you passed on something from the dead chick from your hands. You might want to try some Terramycin eye ointment. It will clear up any eye infections the chick might have. You can get it on Amazon, most poultry suppliers here on line and I do believe even Walgreens carries it. Follow the directions on the tube.

I'm sorry that I don't have anything to add to help you, but please keep us posted on how the terramycin works for you. Hope it works to clear it up quickly. Not to scare you, but you might want to check out this link as a possible cause.

The terramycin seems to be doing it. That or just keeping it clean. It was crusting over to point i was having to clean the eye every hour or two to keep it from sealing shut with goop. The swelling is still slightly noticable but no more drainage and im sure this little one is out of the woods. Thanks everyone.

Forgot to update. Chick was dead under the light about two days after my last post. It never showed the normal signs of a sick bird and the eye seemed to be healing well and the chick could see prior to mortality.
