Here it goes...
I have a lovely flock of heritage girls..
Honestly so friendly I couldn't be a prouder chicken mama!
The past few weeks a bald eagle has been bothering with my girls. Flying low over...
Landing in a tree to scope things out. I always get out there & get after it when the roo alerts but honest the thing is likely 4 ft tall with a 10/15 foot wing span. My heart POUNDS when I see it!
I can not even imagine how my girls feel!
Onward...
5 days ago the ******* got one of my silkie Roos...
3 days ago ripped all the feathers out of my Cochins back she got away into a stall..
Today I come home...
Looks like a chicken exploded!!!
Run down to the barn, my poor Cochin! Feathers everywhere but she got under the horse trailer to safety! She is badly torn up 9/10 puncher wounds...
She is struggling to walk... Leg is not broken though. I think it's more ribs & Brest bone, there is an audible "pop" when she breathes.
She is alert but not eating right this minute...
Hoping that will come I'm sure she is still in shock.
Upon flock inspection... Another hen had all her tail feathers ripped out, puncher wounds too!'
Obviously this eagle is not going away...girls are going to have to stay locked up now.
Words from others with an eagle problem?

This is following a cleaning..,

Man and you cant even think about shooting that critter. So sorry for your loss. are you in a permenant home for the eagle or a migration route?

also you could try 12 gauge BLANKS to scare it off

You are very lucky to have Bald Eagles in your area and able to see them. They are pretty rare in most parts and most people never get to see one in the wild. Wounding or killing a bald eagle is a federal crime! You could add some netting in the area up on high poles or strung from the trees. You could also add a few owl decoys in the area. They often ward off hawks and other raptors. Plenty of hiding places for the birds and a roo to warn the pack usually gives birds a good chance against aerial predators.

I had 2 of mine killed by Bald eagles, so they do go after chickens.

I stopped free ranging them prior to the eagle attacks because of losses to foxes.

The eagles got them in their run. It is a large run and was not covered. And yes, they were bald eagles unless you know of another bird that size with a white head and tail

I raised the fencing to six feet high in the run. I just used chicken wire for that part, they get locked up in a smaller secure run at night and when I am away.

Then I strung a grid of fishing line over the entire top of the run a foot apart going both directions. Before I got the fishing line up a hawk got a bird while I was in the run. The hawk dropped it when it flew right into the chicken wire and bounced off. Apparently hawks do not see chicken wire well as I have seen them bounce off a few more times.

I have not lost any chickens to flying predators since putting up the fishing line. My run is 40 feet by 70 feet and no trees, so they have plenty of chances to see the chickens, but the fish line shines in the light and they have not come near it.

I have only had it up for 3 months, but I am pleased with the results.

Hi all update...
My lil boots died...
I believe her lung was punchered..
Poor baby!
Since than I have come to find the bald eagle is teaching it's eaglet how to hunt chickens!
& yes the eagle is that big...
It's wing span is just under 4'5
I know this because it crashed down my entire netting system over my run.. I personally saw it do so. As I ran out there to intervene I was face to beak with it!
While talking to conversation I can not kill the eagle but I can use whatever means nessacarry to protect my flock. Not resulting in death!
I now have a pellet gun on my deck & also a type of noise maker "banger" used to scare bares.
I will have no issues scaring this eagle off my property..
He explained to me how they will memorize your patterns, & make it a routine to see if food (chickens) are available to be taken as they are in fact a lazy hunting bird.
He could just as easly pick up my puppy!
I live on Vancouver island where bald eagles are more abundant than u can imagine!!
More if a nuisance bird to those of us with flocks & ponds!
So here is to hopping repaired netting & big bangs are sufficient!

You are fortunate to only have one eagle after your flock. I have run nylon lines across my smaller pens but the open fields where they like to spend most of their time is not safe. I have numerous after mine.. Have counted 11 once and an amazing 17 in the trees overlooking my field. There is an abundance of them in this area.. I know they are protected but have now taken over some areas here and are in direct competiton for the salmon the bears n other animals rely on. Too bad we have such an unbalanced predator prey scenario now. No one to thank for the mess but ourselves.
