Hi there, I know it's too early to tell for sure yet, my chicks are only 2 1/2 weeks old but one of them has noticeable differences to the other two. I have two (I'm assuming) Speckled Sussex and one (again assuming) Light Sussex, and I have had them assuming that one is a roo and the other two are little girls.

George:

Peppa:

and Boo:

As you can see there are comparable differences between Peppa and George, George has thicker legs, bigger (pinker) comb and different feathers to the other two. Boo is very timid compared to the other two, who play fight a lot. If they play fight a lot does this mean they might both be roos or is it just what chicks do for fun? The two SS are siblings anyway so not really a problem for them to stay together, just not wanting two roos really.

What I'm worried about, is they all seem to have the makings of spurs on their legs - does this happen to all chicks or is there a possibility I have 3 males? I definitely wouldn't be able to keep them all if that's the case :(

What are your thoughts on breeds - am I right? And gender - as far as we can tell so far anyway.

Here they all are together, L to R, Peppa, George, Boo:

I think Peppa and George are roosters. Not sure the breed.

Thank you!

I was starting to think they were both roos, but they're very different in feathering and stature, that's the only thing. George has a considerably bigger comb too, and it's redder. Has been for about a week now, so it's not like Peppa is just slow to develop really.

Anyone got any firm ideas on breeds?

I'm almost 99% sure that Boo is a light sussex. Pretty cute. I had a light sussex rooster. He was great until my neighbors started hitting him when he came on their property. Then he lost all trust in humans and attacked everyone so we had to kill him.

Sorry. That was a terrible story. Light sussex roosters are good roosters. Unless they're beaten. You could pet mine.
