I bought 6 americauna pullets that are 4 months old... 2 of which I discovered were roosters and are now gone. I really need help sexing the rest of the birds!!! The only one I'm convinced is a hen is the all black one. I think the one with lots of white on the neck is a rooster. I have zero experience raising chickens so I already feel pretty stupid someone sold me roosters and told me they were hens :( I've seen lots of similar posts so I'm hoping the BYC community will help me out too!! Great thanks!

Thanks for checking it out. What makes you sure they are rooster? The tail feathers? I greatly appreciate your help!!

Hi MackChick and

Unfortunately I agree with your assessment that all but the black one look like boys. I'm sorry about that!

The ones that look like boys have more advanced/red comb development when compared to the black one, they have saddle feathers (in front of the tail) that are coming in pointed, some have curved sickle (tail) feathers, the hackle feathers are more pointed (although with EEs the girls can have pretty puffy hackles with penciling that can look boy-ish), and the white one has red coloration bleeding on to the white on his wing-bows/shoulders that is classic male coloration.

I agree that the odds are that redrooster is right, and somebody saw you coming, with your lack of knowledge, and sold you a whole load of roosters and laughed. :I

It isn't so much the tail feathers, as what are called the 'saddle feathers.' Those are the glossy feathers that fall from the tail and off to the back of the wing. Only males have these feathers. That, combined with the size and redness of the comb and wattles confirms that you got one hen.

:<

Sorry about that-- time to read up on some chicken literature, however, and get started on your adventure ^^

Thanks so much everyone for your help. I feel so annoyed that I am trying my hardest to start up my backyard egg production and she took advantage of me! I could've been spending all this time and money on real hens :(
