The extent of your success will depend largely on the breed.
One must handle the birds frequently when they are growing and give lots of treats like mealworms.

Best way is have a 6 year old who won't leave them alone until they are tame haha. Just handle the babies everyday, not all will be greatly tame but some will.

Silkies are usually quite tame.
Rhode Island Reds are people friendly but can be bullies in a mixed flock.
I haven't had ISAs but people I know love them and claim they're friendly.
I never handled any of my birds as pets, just to check on health. Without ever handling them, Orpingtons and Jersey Giants were tame enough for me to pick up in the yard.
The rest of the breeds, forget it.

thanks for your help!!
I'm thinking of getting some mealworms for my chickens, but I'm just not sure where to get them from because I live in Australia

mealworms good question if all else fails try e bay I get them from here from time to time
but a animal store that sells reptiles should have them or go out in your yard and turn
over some dirt and get some ground worms if you do not live in the desert ........

so you don't have to use meal worms, you can use other types, like worms out of the garden??

To tame your birds first spend time with them but don't upset them and always try to feed them
from your hand good stuff like cooked rice or cooked vegetables or stand close to the food after
you have put out the feed for the day but the best time to start is early in age but it sounds like
you passed up this opportunity already so now try the next best thing when it is time to roost
this is when predators like to try their hand so when the evening starts go out and just touch
them to start and after awhile you might be able to pet them .......
last month I got three new genies all three months old and at first they kept their distance
but due to using the evening touch and feeding method I am getting closer every week I am
up to about six swipes before a complaint and to start they rain at every sight of me ,,,, but
what do I know I have lived long enough to have Grandchildren Graduate from High School
at the end of this year .....
