Yesterday I noticed that one of my older hens was looking a little pale, so I decided to try take a closer look at her. She's quite thin, but does not appear to have any other issues that I can see, smell or feel.

Treatment plan will start with weighing and worming daily with fenbendazole for five days at 50mg/kg, which right now is ~1.3ml of Safeguard. I didn't see any mite or lice yesterday, but I couldn't find my dust, lol. Today I'll find it before I catch her and she'll get dusted after she gets wormed.

Here she is. In this picture her comb is quite a bit redder than when I caught her.

How is her appetite? Is she eating as she would usually eat? Is her food consumption as much as usual? How is her stool? Is it regular color and consistency? How is her crop? Is it emptying as it should? if she's still eating as usual and no other visible signs you might try increasing her protein levels and see if she can put on any weight. Worming is great because it's possible she has worms taking her nutrition. See how she responds to the increase of protein and wormer. I know hairworm can cause paleness and weight loss as well as other worms. See if she is able to gain any weight back after that course of treatment. Weigh her often keeping a close eye out for any more weight loss. I would try this course of treatment first.hopefully she will respond positively . How is she in the pecking order? There is not a chance she is being bullied away from her feed is there? If she continues to loose weight after treatment i might suspect something more serious like Leucosis. Leucosis is a viral disease causing internal cancer and internal tumors. Symptoms are weight loss and listlessness. The virus effects the white blood cells. Hopefully it's not as serious as that and she begins to gain her weight back but I wanted to bring up some possibilities that cause weight loss. I wish you the very best and I do hope this was helpful. God Bless.

You do know that I'm really anal about weighing, right?

Anyway, all very good suggestions and she will get weighed daily and possibly tube fed 27% turkey crumble.

She is interested in food, and her crop never seems really full after she eats, but it's always empty in the morning.

Day Two
Up in weight, so I gave her 1.4ml Safeguard, 3ml Rooster Booster vitamin B12, 3ml Rooster Booster Poultry Cell and 1ml ACV (I don't usually do this, but this is an experiment, lol) and 120ml 27% turkey starter mixed with water.

That's Great news!! So happy to hear she is gaining weight! You know that's a very good sign! ! She might have had some worms taking her nutrition away from her, thus the weight loss. Please keep us posted on her improvements and weight. I'm very glad to hear she is doing better!

.

Do you put the feed through a blender to get it liquified enough for tube feeding or just so much liquid it goes through the tube easily? I guess a lot of liquid would possibly water down the feed too much?

With the bigger birds I use a size 30 french tube, so wet crumbles go through quite easily.
