I'm having issuues with a hen jumbo coturnix quail.

She suffered an injury to her lower jaw, the skin at the side sort of is peeled back & gashed. We noticed immediately & removed her from her new pen (we don't know whether the pen was the cause or nearby chickens which are still having their run built.

So, I brought her inside yesterday & cleaned her injury. Then I popped her down on the floor while I sorted out a cage for her & she promptly found the only cigarette filter on the floor under the sofa (those white cotton ones for rollups).

I spotted it & dived for her & she raced away & just gulped it down. The first bird to ever eat a bloody cigarette filter.

Now today I went outside to check her & she is more lethargic this evening, she laid her first egg this morning though in the house. She's doing white runny poops with a little bit of "poo" & won't eat & is wandering around puffed up.

I've checked her crop & it feels empty, but she's so puffed up I couldn't tell if it was swollen or not. Both sides look the same size. I felt her crop & couldn't feel anything.

So now I don't know what to do.

She won't eat even soft food. She's puffed up with her eyes closed sometimes looking like she's going to sleep & is easy to pick up. But, again, she was in the house last night & she was awake late, so I don't know if she's just tired also!

She was eating yesterday.

Is her beak / jaw hurting her too much to eat?

Is her crop impacted with a filter?

Is she very tired?

Is it all three?

I couldn't even watch her today to see if she passed the filter, I had to get all the other animals into shelter due to flooding.

Any advice?

I've tried giving her oil, she won't eat. But she DOES show an interest in food, comes over, looks at it for ages, then wanders off.

The beak injury is to the lower jaw, like a nasty tear to the skin at the side of the beak which pulled back the skin. It bled badly & looks very tender.

Can you post a picture? She is not the first chicken to eat a cig butt, she should pass this as it biodegradable, but you never know what will cause an impact.

Have you cleaned wound,is the skin just hanging? It is possible her not eating is related to pain. I'll be honest i do not know much about quail only chickens,so hopefully the same emergency advice applies. She is probably lethargic b/c she is not eating. If she will not eat,you may want to consider tube feeding her. Birds in general cannot go long without food, they require a constant supply of food to fuel their bodies,no food and they become lethargic trying to conserve whatever energy they have left. Without water they become dehydrated very fast. Keep her inside and keep her warm, when ill/injured birds cannot regulate their body temp,so additional heat is required.

For pain relief the information i have for a cortunix quail is a low dose aspirin(81mg)crushed and placed in 1 cup of water, changed fresh 3 times a day. If using an adult aspirin the dose is 1 aspirin to 1 quart of water, made fresh 3 times a day. Aspirin is effective in relieving pain and swelling.

For her wound i would recommend vetericyn as it can be placed around face and in eyes. Keep offering her some of her favorite foods, encourage eating/drinking.

I am giving the aspirin dose for chickens just in case she will not drink enough water. Dose is a low dose aspirin(81mg) or a reg aspirin(325mg)dose is 25mg per lb of body weight, crush and place in water or sprinkle over feed or give orally(wrap in a pce of meat or cheese).

For food try giving her scrambled eggs, oatmeal, etc.

Ok, I managed to get quite a bit of watery chicken grower pellets down her via a teaspoon (fed a too many sick & orphaned songbirds when I was younger). Unfortunately the quail feed is mainly seeds, so was impossible to turn into "soup".

I've put her in a 24 inch dog crate & provided a 100 watt heatlamp with soup & water nearby. She's just standing with her eyes shut. She can walk etc, but is very lethargic.

I managed to get a little aspirin down her to.

I think the issues her beak, she's not showing signs of anything lodged in her crop & she's still passing droppings often.

The droppings she's passing though are like white eggwhire squirting out of her bottom & it clings to her vent like eggwhite. She laid her first egg yesterday morning, so this has me worried about eggs now breaking in her, because this is really just like eggwhite with white poo mixed in.

Is it some form of diarrhea or what>

I want to show you all pics so you can help her more, but we've got no camera's.

Also, during the feed, I noticed her bottom jaw has gone a little off center from the injury.

Her runny whitish poop is probably from drinking water and not eating much food. I have seen this white watery poop when my chickens drink large amounts of water. Poop should firm up with you feeding her.

i believe the issue with eating is related to beak injury, when it is painful to eat, they just don't. Watch for infection. Make sure she has enough room in crate,to move away from heat lamp if she becomes too warm.

She died this morning, I'm afraid

.

I performed an autopsy on her crop & intestines. No filter. Her crop & intestines were already bulging with bad gases & rigor mortis had set in. So that ruled the filter out.

We have a cat, the only times I've seen birds go downhill that fast & in that manner is after a cat attack because of the bacteria in a cats mouth & on the claws kills birds fast without antibiotics. I'm wondering if he hooked her head & pulled her through the bars. All her symptoms add up to that based on what I've seen before & it would explain the gash if she was hooked by him.

Needless to say, I gave her a rinse out & gave her to the cat

we don't feed him unless he is going underweight which never happens because of the amount of mice he catches. He's actually overweight a little. The vet said he was too heavy.
We just flea / worm him & take him the vets if he needs to go.
