I picked up 6 ,1 week old chicks last Friday. I put them in my coop under a cardboard box with the sides cut out so they can have access to the coop. You can see 2 nipple waters on the left side hanging down and food on the right. 100 watt flood light is hanging from roof down into the box for heat. ( Light is in Box)

This setup is simple. cheap and works. It was 12 degrees this morning and the chicks were fine. The nipple waterer furthest from the light had a little ice up. The birds were smart enough to stay under the light till daybreak.
Thought I would post this for people who are nervous about putting there birds out in the coop.
I cut the box a little higher on this side to take this picture. I left it sort of hinged so I can fold it back down. I will fold it back tonight to help keep the heat in. Also I pack the shavings up against the cutouts at night to keep out drafts.

Hope this helps.

I really appreciate you sharing this!! I'm putting our babies out in the coop when they are about 3 weeks or so old because they'll outgrow their brooder by then and I've been a nervous wreck about it! Thank yoU!

Glad I could help.
Don't be nervous just make sure the lamp is secure.

I was going to put them in the same box right side up in my garage but changed my mind. I new they would outgrow it fast. Also the next town over from me had a small barn burned to the ground, killing all their livestock. Heat lamp was the cause. So that made me think twice about brooding in my garage. Gas cans.... 2 cars with gas......lawn mower full of.....you know.

Oh gosh how sad! Yeah I'm very nervous about the whole heat lamp situation for sure. I've been trying to learn as much as I can about raising chickens that last three years and I was telling my husband that it was a whole other level finally having to put it to use...then you doubt everything! LOL!

Bumping for folks not sure about putting the chicks outside still. Update.

The chicks are about 6 weeks old and doing fine without the100 watt flood light anymore. Temps are still going down into the upper 20s low 30s here.
Here is a photo I took about 1 1/2 weeks ago. I flipped the box on it's side and put in a roost for them.

They no longer have the box or light. And they are roosting higher in the coop. I will try to post a picture of them this week. They are feathered out a lot more than they are in this photo.
So If your having concerns about putting your chicks out in the coop and their a few weeks old,I wouldn't worry. I'm glad I started mine in the coop the day I took them home.
No smell or dust to deal with in the house. And I did this with a 100 watt flood light not a 250 watt.
