Why does it seem golden laced Wyandottes are so hard to sex?! I have looked all over and found pics of cockerels and pullets that look like my chick... But the majority are roos.

This is my 5 week old GLW Hermione. I have never had GLWs before and she is the only of the breed I have. She has feathered way slower than my five other chicks that I purchased all together for laying hens from a local feed store as day old pullets. She definitely acts like a roo, very skittish, Stands up straight, and bumps chest with other chicks, aggressive Behavior... Though my barred rock acts the same way and is obviously a hen. You can see the characteristics that have me extremely concerned (I cannot have roos). Now instead of asking myself, can it be a roo? now I'm asking myself, Is it possible that it can still be a pullet?!

Your GLW is a rooster. 100% certain.

That size of comb at 5 weeks and you can see the strips of color at wings. GLW pullets have lacing not blocks of color.

Thanks for your input, I really appreciate it! Though I am so disappointed, you really are 100% sure?
I don't know much about the gender specifics for GLW other than the typical secondary sex characteristic such as comb color ect. So can you please explain what you mean about Roos having blocks vs lacing on the wings? If know for sure based on something concrete I will re home him now.

Thanks again

Quote: Okay...is anything in life 100% certain???? In chickens especially??? I guess no....BUT...I would be SHOCKED if this turns out to be a hen. (I scrolled and looked again...and yep...rooster.)

That much fleshiness and red in the comb at 5 weeks has always meant rooster for me. Also, taken with the fact that it has a taller stance, thicker legs...neither of which alone would indicate roo but with the comb really scream roo. Then add the fact that the coloring is not coming in like lacing but blotches over solid black...in particular barring over the wing bows. That really is tale telling. although in the GLW coloring in both sexes often looks a bit odd and uneven until maturity. However the girls patterns will generally be more even across the whole body like wallpaper (indicating the lacing that will be all over the body) while the males will have more patch-work quilt type blotches in the color areas of the roosters.

Don't give the bird away yet, but in another couple of weeks I think you will be convinced this is a fella.

Thank you so much for the feedback and comparison pics; very helpful!

I will wait a bit to rehome him but I think I am just in denial! I guess I was hoping someone would say there is still a decent chance he is a she ;)

Thanks, yeah I am just waiting for something concrete so I can rehome 'hermione'.

I have never had this breed so I dont know what to look for. I was hoping someone could see something I can't (other than his red comb and waddles of course) that will tell me for sure boy....
I am holding out hope for a pullet until boy feathering or crowing I guess lol
