Good morning BYCers. I am hoping that I put this in the correct forum. I am a new chicken owner. Adopted 4 two year old hens a couple of months ago. Fell in love with one of the particular breeds and with living in the city and NOT WANTING ROOS the black sex link was very attractive to is when we bought chicks. My chicks are 4 weeks old today. All along one has been significantly larger than the other 3, and this morning when I went to the garage to feed and water them I noticed that the three smaller girls are all getting the red collar feathers that the black sex links have. My bigger "girl" is solid black, and her tail is double the length of the other 3. Any ideas on if she would still be a black sex link or did the hatchery or feed store get my chick mixed up?

A picture would be helpful - a black sex link male would be barred, not solid black - and pullets can show very different amounts of coloration that develops at different times in regards to the red. Either she is a minimally marked/late blooming BSL pullet or another breed entirely, which is why a photo would help.

400
. The chick in question is closest to me

I don't see anything terribly alarming or "rooish" at this point. It may help to know that females actually tend to develop their tails faster than males - yes the male tails eventually become much larger, but during the initial feathering process the females generally feather out faster, including in the tail region.

Probably just a very dark and vigorous growing girl. The only way for this chick to be male is if it's another breed entirely. Not very likely unless your store was selling another black plumed breed at the same time. But, nothing looks masculine about her at this point.
