Hey hey, new member from the UK.

I've been lurking this site and others across the web for a while now as I'm hoping to be a future (first time) chook owner. Don't know when that'll be as I don't even know if I can keep 'em (I've got to contact my local housing manager with my housing plans and how many I wish to keep among other things) - here's hoping it's a yes. Would like to build a coop though I've never built anything before so it'll be interesting to see how that turns out. Once I've got coop plans I'm happy with I can send them to the housing manager to see what they say. One thing is for certain though, I can see why people say they're addicting, I haven't even got any yet and the number I'd like keeps changing - first 3, then 5, then 6...I'd like now 8+ but given I live in an urban setting 6 is likely the max. (My main concern being noise, from what I understand generally hens are quiet -we'll be getting hens, no cocks- and generally the most noise they make is their 'egg song', I just don't want that egg song being at silly hours of the morning because of neighbours.) I was planning on starting off with 2, getting in the routine of looking after them, then introducing another 2 and so on...

Fortunately where I live we don't have any preds, no foxes or the like (just a few neighbourhood cats.) Here's hoping I can keep some chickens! I've seen some gorgeous breeds on here that I'd love to try raising.

I would like to know if it's possible to make yourself 'invisible' on this site? (I don't tend to log out of sites and like to hide my online status when possible.)

Thanks for reading, hopefully I'll be posting more on here.

Welcome to BYC!

Hens are fairly quiet all the time, with exception of their egg songs. Not all of them "sing" after laying an egg. Most hens lay between the hours of 8 am to 2 pm. So the neighbors won't be hearing singing hens at 6 am or anything.

As for making yourself invisible, the only way you can make yourself invisible (I think) is to become a "Platnium Member".

Have you stopped by our learning center yet? Lots of good articles on all the aspects of keeping poultry...

If you have any questions about anything, feel free to ask. Welcome to our flock!

Thank you for the welcomes. That's reassuring to hear TwoCrows. One of my neighbours is a bit deaf and the other I have let them know of my plans and asked them to contact me first if noise becomes an issue. I'll certainly have to take a look at the coop related articles.

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! Good luck with your chicken project, hope you are able to get birds!

Well, thank you for the welcomes and any future welcomes I get. (I want to refrain from bumping this thread anymore in case of spam. :p)
