Hello all, from the SE corner of Oklahoma. A neighbor gave me 5 guineas a couple of days ago and wife decided we need chickens. Now we've bought 8 reds, 10 black marans and one lonely chick we forgot the name. Made a major mistake by not putting a light on them and have lost two because of that. WON'T make that mistake again.

I told the wife for the price of chicks and materials for a coop, I could have bought 300 dz eggs.

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! Good luck with your new flock, sorry about the chicks you lost. That first egg does tend to be rather expensive, but you get a lot of entertainment and fun out of the birds! You might like to check out the BYC Learning Center, lots of good articles on all aspects of chicken keeping you'll find helpful. https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center And it is always fun to check out your state thread for chicken keeping neighbors https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/501128/okies-in-the-byc-iii

Welcome to BYC!

Sorry about the chicks you lost. These things happen. I have found that keeping chickens to make chicken eggs cheaper doesn't work. The cost of up keep of the birds will always far out weigh the price of a eggs. But it is the joy of keeping your flock and knowing that you are eating good eggs.

Enjoy your flock and welcome to ours!
