I have two that I bough as pullets. They are 12 weeks old in these pictures. One I'm now pretty well convinced is a cockerel. The behavior, comb and what appears to be hackle feathers. The other began worrying me when its comb and wattles grew larger, but they are not as dark and appear different from the other one. What do all of you think? They are hatchery stock, from Meyer this spring. Thanks!
The one I think is a cockerel is on the left in the first 3 photos, then pictured by himself. He does not have any sickle feathers yet, though the other one sorta does. I'm a bit stumped!

Thanks you two. For some reason when I posted from my computer it said the poll expired in 1999. Lol I dunno. I didn't know how to remove it.

Little guy on the left starting his little man crowing this week. It sounds so funny. The other's feathers are still way different and the comb is not as long or tall as the now confirmed boy. I'm holding out hope! Lol

YAY! I have four BAs and one of them (just one, thank goodness!) began "talking" a little bit two days ago. They are 11 weeks going on 12 weeks old. So I'm "holding out hope" too!!

Lol Good luck!
I only have two of these big, fluffy birds. Not buying anymore for awhile so I seriously want that one to be a pullet :)

Big and fluffy is right...and SO soft! I love BAs because of their temperament, so docile and loving. That's not to say they won't peck...mine do on occasion but it's never anything aggressive. I just think they're looking for treats in my hand. I'm just hoping that the one is a roo, as BAs are known broodies and I never......ever.......want to go through the brooder box thing again...aaack!!

Lol! We're going through that now. We bought started pullets and I swore I'd use broody hens and never buy chicks. Well, that last about a month! :p
I didn't manage to get any Orpingtons and no one else has BAs that I've seen in the area but I'm determined to get some at some point. I found some Marans yesterday and I've been told they're sweet as well.
These BAs are the only ones I've been able to handle much. Their feathers are so soft! Basic black isn't interesting to me until they get larger, then they're so shiny and the green sheen in the male's feathers is stunning. I do like them.
