Need some advise please

Should I keep all my hens in the duck house until mating season is over?? We have

1: female Khaki Campbell, whom has a nest and has FINALLY become broody
1: female Welsh Harlequin (not broody yet, but is laying about every other day)
1: Jumbo female Pekin, who is showing some injury on the back of her neck and eye.

We have 4 female Mallards that fly away from all the drake rapist.
Lastly, we have 6 males ( 4 pekin drakes and two very unruly rapist Khaki Campbells that are less than a year old).

Would it be ok to move Butterscotch's nest and eggs (broody khaki campbell) into the duck house? It is currently located by our flower bed near the lake.

Should I also move the other two hens into the duck house to prevent future injuries??

Thank you in advance for any advise!!

Hi Subhanalah,

as I am new to ducks over the past couple of years, what would you say is to many drakes per females? I know I definitely have 7 females, with 5 drakes, or it could be 8 females with 4 drakes, but either way this is the approx. ratio, I am inclined to say 7 females to 5 drakes, they seem to be friendly and I really don't see much in the love making dept happening lol and no female looks to be ruffled. I suppose it may depend on the group, as they all get along well. I started with one drake and 2 females originally and they have had a nest of babies each. one having 2 ducks and the other having 7 and only weeks between each other and they just get along really well, so could this have a bearing on being well behaved?

Cheers kaz :)

How old are your young drakes? They may not have reaches sexual maturity (all of them).
it's best to have 3-4 ducks per drake, minimum 2 ducks per drake, providing they have plenty of space.

I have always read/heard 3-4 per drake. So you need to either make a few of your drakes dinner, rehome them, or get more hens! They can even kill hens, they will gang up on one and rape her... its not pretty as you have seen by your injured one.

Its getting to be mating season here and our drake is reaching full maturity and I'm noticing feathers! I'm glad the hen isn't timid cause she will go at him... Anyway we have 2 more hens that will join them full time once they reach maturity. Right now they can only see each other through fencing and get supervised meeting times that seem to always end with the babies getting attacked but not hurt.

Hi,

I do believe you will still get eggs, but they wont be fertile. I could be wrong in saying this, as I have always had a drake with my 2 girls that I originally started with, and I am no expert when it comes to ducks, but like chickens they don't need a rooster and you get plenty of eggs! Just not fertile eggs :)

Eggcellent! I just want eggs and no quarrels.

lol, lucky for me, I don't have any quarrels YET with my brood, they all seem to be very respectful of one another....I worried a little when I read how Guinea fowls can be so nasty/aggressive to others, but mine are just placid and friendly, so are my ducks and chickens, even the Roosters are nice lol....One of my guineas and drakes are inseparable, walk together and sleep together! One of my roosters feeds the guineas just as he does his hens lol...so all in all no quarrels, so I am hoping this remains!
