We all enjoy our flocks for different reasons. Some of us just love having chickens as pets while others enjoy breeding or showing them. Tell us which part of keeping your own flock you enjoy the most.

I originally wanted chickens for the eggs and to raise them as chicks. Since my only experiences with chickens had been at my grandparents' poultry farm where there were wild chickens, I had no clue that chickens could be such pets. As soon as I got my babies, I learned I was wrong. My babies did nothing but snuggle with me, sleep in my lap and peep when I wasn't around. Even though they are now adults they still love sitting with me, cuddling, etc, etc. Whenever the hear the back door open, they start going crazy! They are without a doubt, part of the family and not considered any less than another pet. Of course their eggs are a huge plus and I often get upset when they stop laying. But, I would rather have a chicken who laid no eggs than a chicken who couldn't be tame. My chickens are my babies and I will forever love them.

I'd say hatching eggs, followed by their companionship. I love hanging out with my flock, just watching them go about their business, or sitting in the coop talking nonsense with them. It's so relaxing. And chicken TV doesn't get better than watching a broody hen with her chicks!

I enjoy my free-ranging pets and the fresh eggs now; however, I hope to be breeding and hatching in the future. My first cull is coming up because my Roos are not as enjoyable as the girls.

I would choose as my main reason for having backyard chickens is they are very therapeutic for me. They are my reason for getting out of bed each morning....The eggs are great too!

I just started raising chickens I got them originally for eggs and meat (for roosters) and then I fell in love with my girls they are so commical to watch in the yard as they jump to get treats. Never knew they could be so awesome. I grew up with ducks who would never let you pet them so when I got chickens I didn't expect to be able to pet them either, I was wrong! Can't wait till next year so I can hatch out chicks!! :)

I, too, originally got chickens for eggs...but very quickly realized what sweet, endearing creatures they are. Now I just take in rescued hens-don't even care about the eggs.
