Riddle me this....why does one of my Bourbon Red's puff up like a Tom from time to time?

Hormones &/or social signalling. The girls just tend to do more in the way of threatening warbling barks/trilling, and attacking with beaks, than displaying around like sailing ships with all the canvas on (males) looking for that breeze. However, juveniles will test their limits (welded wire separating mother from daughter might have contributed to this bit of cheekiness):
And, signalling dominance, by way of display, when the boss hen (mama) comes back to the flock and asserts control? Feathers smooth right back down after a few strikes on the head, with the beak.
