Hi all,
My runt hen developed sour crop about three weeks ago. I researched and executed what to do as per suggested on this site, and a few days later she pulled through. After that she had diahrea. It stayed with her for a week, I thought that was OK, she was getting back on her feet. But now two, going into three weeks later, she still has it. She is eating drinking and walking around with the others. Today I checked her for a watery belly and or egg bound, she has a very squishy belly in comparison to the others. But it is not distended to any degree. This morning she was standing in the corner with her tail down, empty crop, and squishy belly. While I will continue to read up on water belly, do any of you have any ideas or suggestions? Her diahrea is very watery and her energy is about 3/4 of what it could be. Thanks!oh, I forgot to mention she hasn't laid an egg since she was sick with sour crop. Could it be that it simply takes a very long time to heal from sour crop?

Many things can cause it. The crop problem is almost certainly secondary to what causing the fluid build up in her belly.

Check for an egg... Put on glove, lube with KY jelly and gently insert finger no more that 1 inch. Here are pictures to help guide you:

ok, thank you very much for your help. I will check her in the morning. I have felt her belly externally and not felt anything firm. But i will double check by doing this. Lets say that i find nothing when i do check this, do you think that there is any chance that she is still bouncing back from sour crop? thank you.

so i checked her, and there was nothing at one inch like you said. I made a mistake and inserted my finger all the way in (Gently, and taking my time of course with a well lubed finger) and at full finger depth i did feel something what felt like an egg. I felt her from the outside as well, and i couldnt feel it from there. I am very new to chicken anatomy, it was low, in the area where the above diagrams shows the liver, pancreas and intestine meet. Yesterday her diahrea was more solid, today i havent checked it because it is raining. A little bit of watery white stool did come out with my finger. So now my question is, not knowing what the organs should feel like at a full fingers depth, does this still sound like egg bound? i will read up on that now. and if so, suggestions as to what i should do? thank you again for your help. P.S. i had no idea that a chickens body temp was so warm inside...almost hot! no wonder they can handle the winters so well!

No harm in going in that far, but if what you felt was on the left side, it was probably the gizzard. This used to confuse me until I necropsied a few, cause when you see gizzards in stores, they are quite small, but in a live or dead bird, they are often about the size of an egg.

Kathy, I have been reading up on waterbelly. Ive read where you have helped a lot of other people as well. I wanted to thank you for that! My hen is still the same. She is running around with the others, eating, drinking, foraging. Her only symptoms are no egg laying, slight diahrea, and slight squishy belly. For the first time since she had sour crop (a month ago) she got in the box and started squawking. No egg though. I checked her externally for egg binding and all I felt was the slightly squishy belly. From what I've gathered about waterbelly is it builds really fast. So I'm not sold that it is waterbelly. So meanwhile I'm still reading up and looking for any suggestions from anyone as to what it can be. Thanks again!
