Dong Tao - World's most expensive breed (with pictures)

I've officially seen the first chicken EVER that I didn't say "I need one of those!"

I think there are 2 or 3 breeds with legs like this actually... does anyone know if it harms the birds? It looks like it would be painful, but the ones in the video seem to have no problem walking around. A lot of them are missing feathers but that could be caused by many things...

Anyone have them in the US? Or anywhere outside of Vietnam?

Same here...

Everything I see that everyone else on here has I seem to want -except these-. One need only need to skim over the "Emergencies" forum to see how many people's birds get bumblefoot. Seems like these would have problems like that even worse.

They really are just kinda ugly looking

Something I noticed, in that video and on a quick internet search. It looks like the show birds have those ENORMOUS legs but the legs on birds ordinary people have are less so. There are probably two strains of the bird, a show strain and a hatchery-type strain.

This next one is labelled as a mature dong tao for sale, notice the legs are not nearly so thick:

Well the pictures if the show ones made me feel better if anything lol... At least those have feathers and look healthy overall; those other ones looked like "puppy mill" chickens :(

I wonder if they have to pay special attention to make sure microbes and/ or pests don't burrow into those huge scales on their legs?...

Supposedly they're delicious... But aren't ALL chickens delicious? :D

Just wanted to add, from what I have heard, the reason they are not in the US is because the Vietnamese government protects the breed and does not want them exported. People have tried exporting them but with no luck for this reason.

Hi!
I'm from Vietnam
Dong Tao is Vietnamese chicken breed prized for its delicious meat, has one of the most thickest legs usually not seen among birds of that size.
This chicken breed is endemic to the Dong Tao commune in Khoai Chau district, about 30km from Hanoi.
A kilo of Dong Tao chicken meat is priced around 20-30 usd but special rooster ( 5-6kg) with thick, strong legs can be worth up to 300-500 usd each
Prices very high further during Tet – the Vietnamese New Year – when Dong Tao chickens are in high demand.
After 10-12 month rooster will develop bigger & red legs .
