Been working diligently on the chicken coop and the duck house. It's been a trip that's for sure. Know nothing of them critters, but I'll do most anything for the wife. She's having a great time with all the chickens and the ducks, and I must say, I'm having a bit of a laugh and enjoying it myself. One thing, those ducks are some Nasty, messy birds!

The chickens are way less nasty than those dang Ducks!!,

What a great forum, and so many great ideas from you all. It was hard to decide which way to go with the coops, but I think we are happy with the way we ended up going. Both coops have light and electricity. They are also pretty well ventilated, and are well insulated for the winter as well. It's been fun, and it's been quite a journey. Lots of fun, lots of work...hope to be a avid contributor now that we are having fun with our fowl!! Thanks for having us!

Anyways, here we are laying out the foundation for the coops, putting down gravel for drainage and digging a trench for 1/2" galvanized hardware cloth to keep the varmints from digging in under the coops.

Got the cloth in and laid out the pressure treated lumber for under the coops.

I built the coops and the roofs up in the shop where I had power, and no mosquitoes! worked well. Hauled the roof sections down to the site with my jib boom and a bit of rope, and set them in place. Worked well!

Got the roofs fastened in place and now I just need to throw on the sheathing... gotta get them ducks out of the basement!!

Sheathing just about done, just need to get at the roof and get it weather proofed.

One roof complete!!

Roof number two done and a bit of paint applied to the Chicken coop!

Got the run built in sections out in the shop, painted and installed. Used a pile of steel roofing that had left over for the run. Glad to use it and not waste it. The run roof is blue and green, but I don't think the Birds really care!

Got the duck door built, needs more work. The chicken coop needs a whole new door. That'll be next.

Doors are built and installed. Just needs a little finesse and we are on to a new project. A little landscaping and it's a done deal!

The next little project will be a dock / ramp for the ducks to get in and out of the pond, then I'll be off working on shelter for the donkeys.

Seems as though the birds are all getting along... so far!! Hope they are comfy!

Well, that's it for now! The chickens and the ducks are outside and happy!
Thanks for stopping by to have a look,
Cheers

Very cute coop design. I was wondering why you made them so tall and narrow. Was it just for appearance or do you have plans for all the vertical space?

Thanks for your comments. The coops went through a number of design stages and the tall narrow coops with the steep roofs was basically just an appearance thing.

Nice work. Love the details on the coops. You should be proud and your wife should be very happy to have such a handy person around.

Thank you for the positive feed back, but in all honesty, during the construction I threw my back out and my wife ended up doing a lot of the work! She is a handy person!!

Teamwork is a wonderful thing. Hubby helped me with the heavy parts of my coop and the roof but I built the walls and windows as well as building the base and trusses.
I think I am rather handy and I tend to like doing things like this so it all works out.
Tell your wife then that I think that you both did a bang up job and I really like the details on the coops.

Amazing! After an investment for a few chickens, and countless hours and dollars invested in their accommodations, we are finally reaping the benefits. Thought you'd all like to see what a couple of $800.00 eggs look like!!

Great...congrats!!..... but what happened to the pics in the first post of this thread??

Well, the price of the eggs is coming way down. seems to be a few in the nesting boxes every day. Not all are laying yet, but soon I suspect.
The pictures seem to still be in the post..... at least i can still see them.
Cheers
