Hello,
I am new to chickens and Backyard Chickens, and have been reading many, many threads... I have gathered that when chicks/chickens get sick, that being proactive is the best. What should I keep on hand, for example in an Emergency or Medicine kit?
Thanks for any help/advice!

This is actually a really great question!
I'll probably continue editing my post as I think of new things, but here's some I can think of that I often find myself recommending to people.
Corid - used for treating cocci, which can kill chicks very quickly, as well as adult birds
A wormer - Valbazen kills all of the internal parasites chickens can get, and is very safe for poultry. Regular worming is good for the flock.
Tylan - treats respiratory problems
Vetericyn Wound Care - An overall wound healer
Baby Aspirin - painkiller, in case of injuries
Blu-Kote - can be used to cover some injuries, or bare spots to prevent picking from other chickens
Rubbing Alcohol - Can be used to sterilize area if you need to inject anything, do some kind of surgery, etc.
Peroxide - Also sterilizing, can be used to clean INSIDE wounds as well
Neosporin - a safe ointment for poultry, can be used to prevent infections in wounds
Gauze, Medical Tape, Absorbent Pads of some sort, First Aid Wrap - supplies to cover wounds if you need to
Some kind of lubricating jelly or body safe oil - Can to be used to feel for an egg blockage or help with a prolapse
Vitamins or Electrolytes - helps with weak chickens, or baby chicks
Vaseline - good for moistening skin or suffocating mites, either on feathers or on legs
Apple Cider Vinegar - A natural worm preventative
Syringes - Different sizes help. Work with a variety of things, from drawing out fluid, to force feeding, to giving medicine
Nail Trimmer and File - trim nails, file down beaks or nails
Scissors - Can trim feathers, dead tissue, etc
Blood-stopping powder (cornstarch works) - For stopping bleeding in SMALL wounds

I took some of this list from this thread (although none of the specific medicines)

Here are some items that I have used for emergencies... Vetericyn wound care, Vetrap, injectible Tylan 50, Electrolyte and Vitamin Supplement, dropper for feeding, VetRX.

It's good to know where you would keep a sick chicken and if you are willing to seek vet care. If vet care is an option, call around before an emergency arises so you can have a list of qualified avain vets

Welcome to BYC!

I'm pretty hard core when it comes to treating a sick chicken, so my first aid kit includes things that you can't buy at feed stores and places like Walmart. Two of these things that I cannot live without are

1) Proper tube feeding supplies (large syringes and various sizes of feeding tubes).
2) 10% Baytril (enrofloxacin 100mg/ml). It's banned for use in poultry, but I don't care.
