    Stinky brooder? Not anymore

Guys! I have to tell you about my purchase. I have 7 ducklings in the brooder. Ducks are messy, I know... I clean their brooder at least two times a day. I bathe them as well. But, oh my god... the smell... it was still insane. So, I Googled the bejesus out of how to fix this. Pages into...

What Can I Use For A Brooder?

I currently have 5, 5 day old chicks brooding in what I thought was a sufficiently deep and long enough plastic tote. I have pine shavings on the floor and a heat lamp clamped to the side. Well today, my light Brahma, who is quite a bit bigger than the rest, flew out of the brooder. I can’t put...

    Am I on track?

I am a BYC Rookie and I have 23 RIR chicks and they were a week old last Wednesday. I have them in a large kiddie pool (4 foot across) with 2 lamps, 2 feeders (now hanging off the floor) and 2 waterers. I just put a 3 foot wire fence (is that tall enough?) around the perimeter in preparation...

    Brooding different ages and sizes?

So, I have 7 three week old serama chicks that are ready for an upgraded brooder. I brought home a small coop that's about 4wx4lx4h with an attached nesting box, and today I plan on installing the heatlamp and some swings :p Three days ago I had one black copper maran egg hatch (she was in a...

First time brooding in coop - size questions

Hi all. I’ve got a 60sf coop and 8 chickens. The chickens are let out at 7am and free range until sundown when they return to the coop. They stay 99% of the time within a 1/2 acre of the coop sharing a paddock with two horses. There are currently 4 14-16 months old, 4 5-6 month old hens...

Can a broody hen sit on old eggs?

My hen started showing signs of being broody, and today she started sitting, but the eggs she’s sitting on are a bit old (some are about a week old and others maybe older). So I was wondering if she could still hatch them, or if I should buy her some knew eggs (though I might not be able too)...

    Heat lamp or an alternative?

Hello! I I'm about to buy 5 chicks tomorrow. However, I have been struggling with this heat lamp thing. I have read that they are unsafe and could tip over and start fires Etc. I have been Googling like crazy this week trying to find a safer alternative for my very small flock. I'm getting a...

How long is a heat lamp needed for baby chicks?

We have our baby chicks inside and have a heat lamp on them also - the house is warm and comfortable - 1) how long do we need the heat lamp on them? It seems pretty warm, maybe too warm? What temperature is too hot for them? I am thinking of building the chicken wire cave with a heating pad-...

    No Broodiness in 3 yrs.

So I've read up on it, have waited for it to happen, but in 3 yrs. I have not seen any signs of my hens going broody...just wondering what's up with that. Even not collecting eggs for a few days, letting them accumulate to about 10 eggs, hasn't inspired anyone to become broody. Any ideas?

With heat, can I keep brooder box in empy and clean coop?

My first chicks will be here next week, and I'm thinking about locating the brooder box in the coop. There are no other poultry in it and it's freshly cleaned and sanitized. I would have a Chick Heating Plate (radient plate for them to rest under) and a heat lamp, and a portion of the coop...
