~•~The Exotic Chics Of BYC~•~

I'm back.

Anyways, it started three or four days ago, I noticed her poop looked weird and unusually smelly. *whateva* Chickens poop is smelly.

So I didn't think about it.
Well this morning I noticed she wasn't going out of the coop very fast, and when she did jump out, she walked weird like it pained her to do so. I looked at her and realized she had a prolapsed vent.

Shoot! So I picked her up, ran inside, set her in a clean tub of warm water and contacted some chicken people in the area. Not long afterwards she arrived and cleaned off the prolapsed part (I'm thinking maybe the intestines), at first we thought she was trying to push out an egg. But we felt no broken egg shell, no egg, no nothing.
So after cleaning off the prolapsed part, she salted it and the swelling immediately went down, she pushed it inside gently but is came out again. She tried holding it there, we tried everything.
Nothing worked.
So we decided we could try taping it shut, but so she could still poop. We went to get the tape, when I went back to check on here, she was choking!
Wha? We rushed to her side, all my chickens have died before me eyes in the most grotesque manner - she was no exception. I carried her outside, knowing that she was just suffering.
I did the hardest thing I ever did. Grabbed up the axe, laid her on the ground (she was thrashing around) I took a deep breath and swung down as hard as I could.
The first blow didn't take the head off, but the second one did. My little brother wanted me to put her head on a plaque in the living room.
No way!
Her death hasn't quite hit me yet, deaths never do for me. I'm ok for a couple days, but then something will happen to remind me of all the times she would follow me around, or be rocked to sleep on my lap. And I'm down.
I try to forget about it, but I can't, and never will.
My roo, Rio, attended her funeral, and when it was his turn to speak, he cleared his throat and proceeded: "Mabel, I loved you almost as much as I loved myself."

Oh, Rio.
At lest I still have you. Wimp!

OH yeah, I forgot, when I chopped her head off, I noticed string coming out of her esophagus. I realized she swallowed a LONG string! THat was why we couldn't find an egg, b/c there wasn't one!
The string had gotten balled up in her intestines, she was trying to pass it, but prolapsed her vent when she pushed hard. Ouch. :/
