"Right," Ambersong said, eyes still narrowed. "And you and my dad have been together how long?" She turned to her father with an angry expression that masked the sadness she felt reverberate through her entire being. "Dad? You two are together, aren't you?"
"yes, for how long bloodwing? 3, 4 moons? and we been traveling together for longer then that and we have not killed each other"
"Well, we had a few close calls," Bloodwing winked dramatically, but reduced his sarcasm for Ambersong's sake.
For a moment Ambersong opened her beak, but Bloodwing cut her off. "She helped rescue you from Nightshade," he reminded her, pulling his daughter close under one wing. "Without her, you would still be in that dungeon," he looked down at the dark scars imprinted deep on her neck, and his eyes glimmered angrily.
"I--" she looked taken aback, confused. "Nightshade? No, she never touched me, dad." she shook her head. "It was a rooster. Big. Huge, actually. He would come and interrogate me about--" she looked away, head bowed.
