Hi, I’m writing because I don’t know how to solve a situation with my chickens. Three of them have developed a yellow coating inside their mouths. I isolated them, and I took one of them to the vet. He tested her for trichomonas (canker), but the result was negative. They were prescribed antibiotics, and today is the 7th day of treatment. I treated the whole flock.

However, the yellow coating in their mouths hasn’t disappeared. The chickens don’t seem to have problems eating — every evening I can see that their crops are full. I did notice, though, that sometimes when they eat, they cough a little, as if something is stuck in their throat.

Could you please give me some advice? 🙏🏻 I’d prefer not to go back to the vet since it’s expensive and, honestly, I don’t think we have a very good poultry vet in our area. Is there any natural way to treat this? I live in Europe, and some medications for canker are not allowed here.

Do you have any pictures of the yellow spots? Canker would be the most common, and if you have seen any fowl pox virus from mosquitoes during the hot weather, the wet form of fowl pox can cause similar yellow plaques inside the beak. Bacterial and viral respiratory diseases can cause yellow caseous material inside the trachea (airway.) A fungal or yeast infection may appear as white or off white lesions. For canker or fungal infections of the beak, acidified copper sulfate in the water 1/4 tsp (1-2 grams) per gallon (4 liters) of water over 7 days can be used.
