~◊~Thereby Hangs a Tail – RP~◊~

(Okay, so everybody's seen the plot of course. It's June {But they don't know it as June. It's just a month to them.}, and prey is running unusually low. Silentwater's in the best position, as a lot of the remaining prey has moved towards the lake. It's late in the morning. Ready?)

Bracken watched the camp with Mirage. The Alphas' den was in a higher position than the others, giving them a good vantage point. Unlike the nursery, which had a low floor that young pups couldn't climb out of.

As ever, he was worrying about the prey shortage that had been plagued his pack for months. To the casual observer, all seemed fine in Stormpeak. But to him… He saw the tension. The low pile of food in the center of camp. The worried looks. He heard all the whispers, even if his pack didn't know it. For now, all he could do was send out hunting parties and hope for the best.

A sigh escaped him, and Mirage rested her head on his paws. He lowered his head onto hers, but didn't stop watching the pack. He'd never stop watching his pack.

Garnet was hunting. More like desperately searching for food. She needed some alone time. Last night she had dreamed about the night her mate and pups were killed, and a long hunt could usually manage to get it out of her head.

Hemlock sent out a hunting party, including his son. With plenty of luck they'd bring some prey back. Perhaps he'd lead a border patrol later – things were getting tense.

Venom stalked a skinny hare. He was low to the ground, his one good eye focused on his prey. He leapt forward and killed the hare with a bite to the neck.

This hunger was satisfied, this prey killed. But his hunger for revenge – not satisfied. His real prey – roaming free.

Not for long.
Frostwood:

Dalonige sat on his favorite spot, a rocky outcrop, towards the middle of the packs camp, he looked over his pack, proud to be their leader. He laid down and rested his head on his paws, he let out a sigh, he was content, for the moment.

Bramble led the hunting patrol, he looked back to the others "Smell anything?" He asked, in his usual lighthearted, friendly tone.

Silentwater:

Ripple waded in the cooling water, intrigued by the shine of the fish scales belonging to his soon to be prey, he eyed a juicy carp and got ready to thrust his muzzle into the water.

Stormpeak:

Stone sat on the edge of a cliffside, still in view of the pack, he looked out over the mountains to Silentwater territory, he was slightly jealous of them, the prey had moved into their territory during the famine. He had been trying to convince Bracken and Mirage to take a piece of the territory, but they had refused, he would go to try again he concluded, and set off back to the pack, familiar smells returning.

Breezevale:

Wind stalked a hare, feeding on what diminishing amounts of grass was left, when she felt it was the right time, she lunged and chased it, it dashed away as fast as the wind, good thing Wind did too, she snapped it up midleap and shook it violently, once it was dead, she brought it back to the pack.

Oak lay in the sun, letting it's warm rays comfort him in these troubling times, he looked up at Wind returning and laid his head back down, returning to his light doze.

Loners:

Nightshade silently leapt over a fallen spruce, searching for any prey at all, perhaps she could find someone to hunt for her in these woods.

Pine napped silently in the cavern he called home, his sad life's memory fluttering in his head.

Goose trotted through a grove of trees, not a care in the world, completely wrapped up in his latest escape from three grizzlies by the Salmon Creek.

Avalanche gnawed on an old deer bone, he remembered his old pack, and he remembered the horrors he had witnessed the day they had been ruthlessly murdered. The bone snapped between his powerful jaws, he could never go back to his old life, but he would come back stronger, with a pack of his own, he was sure of it.

And nothing would stop him.

Frostwood:

"No. Do you?" Thistle asked.

Breezevale:

Bird looked up as Wind entered camp, "Nice catch!" She trotted over. "Where'd you find it?"

Frostwood:

Thistle scented the air and gave a small sigh. He wanted to catch some prey, feed the pack, impress his father… Okay, the last reason wasn't too virtuous.

Breezevale:

"Really? I'll have to check that out," Bird said cheerfully.

Wind nodded "Good luck;" She said back, tail wagging slowly

Loners:

Nightshade walked slowly through the shadowy woods, suddenly she caught a scent. Wolf.

Venom was gulping down his kill, his eye watching the surrounding area.

Loners:

The wind changed, and Venom caught the scent of another wolf, a female. Not his prey though – he'd never forget that scent. He sniffed the air suspiciously.
Loners:

Nightshade pondered what to do, finally she made her decision, she walked over, ears back and tail low "Hello, what's your name?" She asked the male.

"Nothing, yet..." Rimy replied in the friendly manner, nimbly weaved back and forth through the trees and undergrowth. She glanced to Thistle, who was the closest to her and gave him a grin, excited about hunting as always, even though they weren't very successful of late, there wasn't much to hunt.

Back at camp, Virga sat atop the rotting trunk of a tree that had fallen the past winter, listening as birds sang in the foliage above. She was hard in thought about the shortage of game, trying to work out what to do, the territory of Silentwater and the prey that flocked to its lake, swimming in and out of her mind...

Hail stiffed the stocks of long grass, and bared his fangs is a low growl, "Wolves...". The scent was not what he had wanted, he wanted elk, dear, rabbit, anything! But no, that was not to be, this was just another day with little prospect of ending the hunger gnawing at his gut. He lifted his head, looking out over the grassland gently swaying in the cool breeze. Hail scent marked over the other wolves scent, wanting to make his presence known. He had only detected the scents of two young males in this pack, and the rest were females. That was a good thing for him, he had been a loner for a long time, and he wanted a pack.
