I visited the Tule Lake Segregation Center today. This was where all of the "disloyal" Japanese Americans were sent during WWII.
By "disloyal" they meant anyone who answered "No" to either of the following two questions on a 33 question form.
27. Are you willing to serve in the Armed Forces of the United States on combat duty, wherever ordered?
28. Will you swear unqualified allegiance to the United States of America and faithfully defend the United States from any or all attack by foreign or domestic forces, and forswear any form of allegiance or obedience to the Japanese emperor, or any other foreign government, power, or organization?
So, if a 90 year old grandmother said she would not be willing to serve in combat duty, she was disloyal. If someone thought that 28 was a trick question (ie; forswearing allegiance to the Japanese emperor when they never HAD any allegiance to him), they were disloyal. If they didn't really understand the questions because they understood or spoke very little English, they were disloyal.
They built a concrete prison inside this prison.
This was the only shower in the prison.
There was more, including some graffiti in pencil written on some of the cells in the prison.
