Devine rounded the back of a broke down building. He knocked once at the graffiti that marked the door, then again in a succession of three knocks. He waited to meet his boss, but their was no answer. He thought about how odd it was that his boss wasn't here, since this is where they met once a week, when is phone began vibrating within his pocket.
Aya was finally ready for an assuredly long day at work, and decided that she better hurry before she'd be unfashionably late again. She didn't really have a car, since it was left at her hospital, so she'd have to walk. In these stupid high heels she always wore.
Thankfully the week wasn't very busy at all as there weren't really any surgeries, so she hadn't missed much. But still, everyone at her workplace hated people who couldn't make it to work and therefore made it inconvenient for others, rightfully so.
Her lungs filled with a dreadful, strained breath as she looked up at the creme-colored hospital building, and then to the large ceder wood sign with her own name on it. This was the place where she was almost taken, and she hoped to God that that would never happen again.
She was sure she was stupid to hope.
She was immediately greeted with questions as she entered the glass doors, for one of her fellow surgeons was standing right there chatting with a patient who was dealing with a lapful of paperwork. And as the door closed behind her, not a second went by before he looked straight at her, obviously expecting her to come soon.
"I'll leave you for a bit to let you fill that paperwork in, alright?" He told the woman and she smiled politely as he walked away, looking Aya up and down with his rather concerned eyes as he crossed his arms.
"So, finally decided to join us in this thrilling job of paperwork and brains?"
Aya sighed and didn't meet his eyes,
"I know you're expecting me to have some detailed explanation, but all I have to say really is that I'm sorry for every inconvenience I've caused by not being here. Something came up, and it was rather personal."
He did not look convinced in the least. She may have really done it this time, and she wasn't sure how to dig herself out of this hole.
"Aya...You left your car in the parking lot, you left without any warning. I know you have problems of your own, but at this point I'm not convinced that they should be kept personal. Everyone here agrees with me on that. You're kind of out of time."
Yep. I've run out of excuses.
