I read this a long time ago, probably in Reader's Digest.

A state Trooper pulls a man over for speeding.

Trooper: Sir, it's the very end of my shift. I don't want to write up a ticket. So, if you can give me an excuse I have never heard before, I'll let you go.

Man: (Thinks for a moment) My wife ran off with a state Trooper last week. I thought it was you and you were bringing her back.

Trooper: Off you go!
