I use the word “roo” sometimes if I’m writing a lot about roosters. Switching it to “cock” or “male” doesn’t sound right to me. I don’t say it out loud, though.
Please don’t sentence me to death for treason.

Too late. Technically cock is the most appropriate although the word is generally taboo in most groups of people. My friends that show use it regularly. Because I have raised a variety of birds including, chickens, ducks, geese, guineas, quail, turkeys, pheasants, chukar, many, many species of finches, doves, pigeons, hookbills, and softbills, I often use "male" as it is accurate and universal for which ever species I'm working with. Roo makes me crazy. Rooster I'll use conversationally, but not usually in print.

I have forced my phone to deal with the word cockerel enough that when I order a large coke with easy ice, my phone always orders a large cockerel with easy ice.

Nope...someone on FacEbook told me they were called GOBLERS.
