(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?

I haven't built the coop yet, but I have the plans on paper, the lumber on the carport, and I picked up the roofing Sunday. Now, if it would just quit storming every day, I could get some building done, lol. :yesss:

Thank you! Yes, I feel the same (about to burst, lol). I hope I can get everything done and documented in time to enter the "Official NYC Coop Page Contest #9". Either way, I will definitely post pics!
Good luck to you, too! We have to get some roofs up for those chickies, lol.

Thanks so much for all the helpful comments - much appreciated. I will have to make sure my coop is safe against predators. I would love to meet a local breeder to get my chicks - probably have to wait for spring :( . Thank you for the offer. Nice deal with the roosters as I could not keep any! Thanks for the info on Bantams - some are so tiny. Can you have them with regular chickens?

Hi! Have fun researching what you want both for a coop and for breeds of chickens.

And as everyone else has stated build a big enough coop to accommodate “chicken math”.

We started off a prefab coop that is now pretty much maxed out and will be converting an older shed on our property into a new larger chicken coop before winter.

I think choosing various breeds for their looks is fun as is choosing breeds for egg color. We have a great variety of light brown, medium brown, blue and green eggs. As well as some lovely girls like Buff Orpington, Silver Laced Wyandottes, Easter Eggers, Favaucana, Black Copper Marans and light Brahma. The Brahma is an especially large and lovely girl :)

You still have time to get your chickens as long as your shelter and run are ready.
From what I understand Bantys and standard CAN be put together but it seems best done by those who have experience since bantys can be bullied by bigger birds. Theres also the egg size to consider. Each breed of chicken, banty or standard, lay a different amount of eggs each week (other than down time in winter). Banty eggs are so small it could take 3- 6 days before you have the equivalent of a single standard egg. If you are raising for eggs stick with standard. If raising for pets bantys are good. If raising for meat there's more in the standards you want to consider. If I'm not correct in any of this I'm sure someone with more experience will chime in.
