Hi,


Just introducing myself. My name is Shell and I finally brought some chicks home. I have intermittently been lurking Backyard Chickens over the last year. Now I am a proud flock owner. My daughter and I picked out a mixed flock of chickens this week. They range from about a 2 days old(?) to a week old. We need to build the coop though.

Not that we watch much TV (don't even pay for cable), but we have watched even less regular television these days because we are tuned into chickTV. So, a big hello from Northern California.

Welcome to the BYC flock. Chick tv is the best, new shows every day, no reruns, no cable or satellite bills. Have you visited the coops section for ideas, - some have detailed plans for their coops and reasons why they did one thing or another. All can be helpful,
 
Welcome to BYC, Shell. Glad you decided join our flock. A lot of us were lurkers before joining. :o) Raising chickens is a wonderful experience for children. My granddaughter (pictured in my avatar) loves our chickens. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck with your chicks.

Thanks everyone! I have looked at the Coop Design section. There are so many good ones. I found the Wichita Cabin to be really helpful with some of the 'Keeper Friendly' explanations. I'm currently drawing up the plans based off a picture I saw online. We are going to strike a balance between budget and size. The coop will be 4' x '4 inside a 4' x 12' x 6.5' run. We got 6 chicks thinking at least one will be a rooster. I don't know what to think if they are all hens. There will be 3 nest boxes. Where we live the wind is the most annoying weather factor. We have some frosty nights, and historically a lot of rain and fog. So, I'm assuming they will be using the run quite a bit. Hopefully that will make up for the size of the coop. And then free-range on weekends, of course. Can't wait to start building.
