I have a 1 day old gosling who appears to be having quite a bit of trouble walking. One of his legs especially seems to give way beneath him when he tries to stand. He is being fed unmedicated starter crumb and has plenty of water and has been eating and drinking fine when placed next to the bowls but has trouble moving around his box. I have not got much experiance with geese and i'm not sure what to do!!

I don't have much experience with geese either ( I have 6 older geese and raised 1 gosling at the beginning of spring). Does its leg problem seem like splay leg ( in which case I would make it a boot) or maybe the walking surface is to slick. I do know that waterfowl need niacin or they develop problems with their legs- but if your baby is only a day old I wouldn't think that would be the problem. I feed all of my geese gamebird feed. Your gosling could still just be uncoordinated. Sometimes it takes them a little while to get their feet to work properly. I would keep an eye on it and if its not getting around better by tomorrow look into making it a pair of shoes. Good luck!

Thank you for replying. I will keep an eye on the gosling till tomorrow to see if he improves. It does seem a bit like splay leg, but it's lags don't go out to the side as much as they would do with splay leg so maybe it is justt unco-ordination. It also had quite a difficult hatching and had to be helped at the end, so maybe that could be why it's taking so long for him to stand?
