1 dead-1 can't walk~~~UPDATE!

Are they hatchery birds or private breeder? Who vaccinated?

If it was a hatchery, then usually the mareks vaccine works good.

If it was a private breeder, then there could be errors to take into consideration and the vaccine hobbyists get is not as good as the hatchery vaccine. They are two different types.

NJ,
just type in Mareks on the forum search. I just did it. There is a lot of info here. Just read through the different threads. DDawn suggested Glenda Heywoods posts. I read some of them, good info there. I'm not finished reading but have to stop for now as I have an appointment to get ready for.

Here's hoping that Pearl gets better every day and that no one else comes down with anything in your coop.

Did you contact horsejody? Mareks is EVERYWHERE, and very prevalent. It doesn't mean you did a thing wrong! It very well could be a broken bone in the leg. I had a young cockerel that broke his leg - darned if I ever figured out how, but I did take him to an avian vet and she confirmed that it was broken. He wouldn't use it at all, and he was good-sized boy and couldn't hold himself up on the other leg.

pips - they came from a hatchery..

thanks Posey & ddawn

Wynette- I am going to contact her now. I am starting to have a really bad feeling about this-especially since the one hen died so unexpectantly yesterday. Do they usually die that fast?? Monday she was fine.

I just had a discussion last night with a close chicken friend, and we are both of the opinion that sometimes you just don't realize they are going downhill because they do seem to be able to handle lots of things on their own, without our intervention. And, if they are ill, they seem to hide it pretty well until they are VERY ill.

And I do think that sometimes you just lose them once in awhile. My first year in chickens I lost a few and I drove myself crazy (and my chickens friend, too) trying to figure out what happened each time. I just think that you to accept it will happen once in awhile with chickens. It's unfortuante and sad, but it happens. Don't beat yourself up, though - it's most likely NOTHING that you did wrong. I'm glad you're researching and trying to figure it out, but if you don't get definitive answers, be prepared to just "let it go." JMO!!

NJ, that's what BYC is here for!

I just hope you do figure it out for your girl.

OH GOOD! Hey, Jody! Jody knows her stuff on Mareks, NJ - BEST of luck!

Wynette: I know those words were for NJ but I'm taking them too.

This sickness and death thing has been really hard on me and I know it is on others too.

Once this 'illness thing that we are in is over' I'm gonna try to let it go. Learned something (actually lots and lots of things) don't name them until they are older and a little more viable.

Have a good day ;-)
