Hey everyone,

I currently have 3 indian runner ducks, one of which has turned out to be a male. I'm struggling to re-home him sadly.

So, can a drake live happily with 2 female ducks? I just don't want him to try mate with my chooks.

Thanks! :)

It can work! The usual issue with a Drake not having enough females is that he has too many mating urges and can overmate his girls. Some drakes are not quite as driven as others so you can always try to keep him and see how it works out.

Thank you! I will keep an eye on him. So far he is 4 months old and I haven't seen him try to mate

That is my ratio right now and mine are 6 months, but I don't have chickens to worry about. I do watch and make sure my girls are not starting to lose feathers on their neck or running for their lives all the time. When/if that begins to happen this spring I have a drake jail ready to go, just to give them a break.

Right now, when I put out fresh water...it's game on and the girls know the price to have a nice swim 😳 but the girls are willing still...

I'll keep an eye on my flock to make sure all is ok, I also have a separate coop and run if he gets too much lol. I've noticed he can get a bit randy in the water occasionally lol must be a duck thing

My son has three pekins brooded together 2 years ago. One turned out to be a drake and there are no problems with the drake overmating the girls. Indeed he rejected the admission of a third female to the group. For 6 weeks last summer, we had to swap him for a young adult pekin drake of mine. That drake instantly joined my son's females and was accepted. He wasn't very proficient at mating despite plenty of encouragement from the females. My son's original drake is now back with his females and it is quite clear those girls are anybody's when it comes to mating!
