I found a giant egg today from a Jumbo Brown Coturnix hen.

Huge compared to a normal sized one.

I have large cartons specifically bigger to accommodate Jumbo Coturnix eggs… and the carton isn’t close to where I’d be able to close it with that egg in it.

It made me wonder… if I hatched that egg… would the chick be huge?:)

And would it be bigger as an adult? And if it was a hen… would it lay eggs that size? Or would it probably not even hatch? I’m guessing/hoping that someone here has seen this… and tried it!

Let me know… I don’t want to unbox the incubator if you already know the answer!:)

Haha we got one long one the other day too! Wondering if it is a double yolk.

We have one hen out of 6 that is routinely laying much bigger eggs (not the very oblong one I’m talking about though) than the others, we are hoping to keep her (once we figure out who it is!) and maybe the next batch of chicks we raise from her will be bigger. Hard to say.

I also… have a hen that layed long eggs reliably, when given enough daylight. I don’t use artificial lighting. The bird is about 15 months old. No double yolks, I’ve eaten dozens of her eggs.

And about a week to 10 days ago… no more 1 long egg every day. I’ve been finding a dried up “egg skin” most days… and I’m guessing it’s from that bird.

Not sure what’s happening… molting? Lack of calcium? I don’t think that’s it… because the majority of the hens are really producing eggs as we approach high hours of natural light. With nice thick shells.

Did producing those long eggs shorten her egg laying longevity?

It's possible that there's just something off about her egg production system. It is also possible that she is more sensitive to lack of calcium than others or has an issue taking in enough calcium.

If your feed contains less than 3.5% calcium, you should be offering oyster or egg shells on the side.
