Hello,
We have 1 male and 3 female quail. They have been together since they hatched in March. About a month ago, we woke up to 1 of them exhausted, wouldn't sit up and we noticed that the male is more aggressive when breeding and he seems to fixate on this one hen the most. I took him out, put food and water at the hens level since she couldn't sit up. She recovered enough by end of day. That was the second time that happened. Same hen. Another hen tends to spook and jump into the side of the cage when the male is in there and bleeds from the mouth. Do, we kept having to temporarily separate the male. Now he's been by himself for around a month. Hens are great, though they do chirp way more. The make, though, is so agitated. Pacing and trying to get out. Kind of spazzy. Any suggestions on helping these guys? If the cage was bigger, would the male chill more or is that irrelevant and his behaviour is just the way he is? They are my daughter's Pets and are in a dog crate that is about 2'w x 3'l x 2' h. Or might that not make a difference. Would putting the male in a different room where he doesn't hear the hens chill him out or are they social birds? Any other suggestions are welcome.

What kind of quail? And regardless of species a larger cage with more "decor" to hide in and around and interact with will certainly help. Personally, anything smaller than a 2X4 for two buttons or a 6x3 for two coturnix is too small
