Thanks for any tips on how to help this gal. Until yesterday mid-day, she seemed fine. In afternoon I noticed she had become very lethargic, just sitting and looking uncomfortable. She did eat and drink a little last night. This morning, she is standing but clearly uncomfortable and not active. I see no obvious signs of injury.

Her crop does seem to be hard and bulging out on her left side, but I am not sure of this. Should I isolate her and try to feed scrambled egg / olive oil? Massage? Withhold feed? Confused.

This batch of chicks only started going outside on grass last week, and have had no other treats, just chick starter. I gave them a big dish of grit when I put them on grass and they all have made many trips to the grit dish.

I am not feeding medicated feed. The chicks are far from my other flock and just have had minor exposure to the soil through the grass these last few days. All other chicks seem fine. They were vaccinated for Marek's.

Thanks for any guidance.

If you think it is an impacted crop, then the best treatment is to offer water and massage her crop (do not give her oil.) A Colace or docussate sodium capsule may also help. If you think it could be coccidosis which includes symptoms of lethargy, weakness, standing puffed up or hunched, diarrhea or blood in droppings, and refusal to eat and drink, then I would treat her with Corid (amprollium). It is a cattle/hog/ and chicken medicine from feed stores. Dosage is 2 tsp of the liquid, or 1.5 tsp of the powder per gallon of water for 5-7 days. Treating all chicks at the same time is best. Afterward, give them some vitamins and probiotics in the water for 3 more days.

x2, it sounds like she has an impacted crop.

Thank you. She is doing a bit better now. She ate some more grit and drank, and is now somewhat more active and preening. Maybe she overloaded her gizzard with clover or a big bug yesterday.

I'll watch her closely -- thanks again!
