Original Post: I have a 1yr old silkie hen that I got in the beginning of July with 1 chick. She's been completely fine until today. Noticed she never came out of the nest box. Not making much movement or even a peep. I picked her up (normally she runs from me) without issues and her right leg seems to not be functioning right. It's tucked back and she can't walk on it. There does not seem to be any blood, or broken bone, or any sign that she might have had an altercation with a predator...and her baby chick seems normal and fine.

Any ideas?

1st Update: she worsened quickly, to the point she couldn't hold herself up anymore, would fall over and sleep. Took her to a vet and they suspected Marek's disease. I had her euthanized :(
They made this for me for free...

2nd Update: Opal's confirmed death (through testing) was Marek's Disease.

Sorry for your loss Mad, she was a pretty girl :hugs
:hugs thank you Debby.
I am so sorry for the loss of your incredibly beautiful girl, Opal. You must be heart broken. What a kind and wonderful gesture by your vet.
Thank you 💜
I'm so sorry you lost your dear Opal 😞
What a sweet beautiful hen she was ❤️
That's a beautiful memento from your vet.
Thank you, it means a lot.

Her baby chick "Sonic-Ian" will most likely have Mareks. My other chickens should already be vaccinated but, I guess only time will tell.

I appreciate your kind words.

I'm waiting on results before I make a decision with her chick. I'm reading that people recommend culling off the infected chickens.
I dont know if my others are actually vaccinated. Would it be wise to get them all tested or...just play a waiting game?

Even if a chicken is vaccinated they can still catch it. Isolate the chick far away from the flock and wait for results.
Keep an eye on the flock, any chickens with symptoms must be isolated immediately
Thank you for the advice. They're separated but I've gone back & forth and handled them all without knowing it can spread through shoes and clothes.
Now, I'm taking that extra precaution but I hadn't known prior to yesterday.
