I went back the hall and found my dog licking one of my chicks. Its wasnt moving much, was wet and cold. She thinks they are her babies so she didnt hurt it but I need advice. I wraped it in a dish town and lightly blow dried it for a minute or two and lowered the heat lamp and placed the chick and towel under it. Its not shivering but it is staying there and mostly closing its eyes. Is there anything else I can do. I am as we speak working on the coop enough so I can at least make a larger brooder out there as I knew they were trying to fly and getting crowded but I did think that at a week they would get out. For now I will put the lid on and cut out part with a screen on top.

sorry if this has been adressed already but I didnt have time to search more than a few pages.

Make sure it doesn't overheat if the lamp is low and it isn't yet strong enough to move. Once it is more alert, dip its beak in some water so it can get some fluids.
It probably just needs to rest. Little thing was probably scared half to death. Good luck.

I am sure the chick was scared but I think it is great that your dog didnt eat it. That shows that he has control and loves those babies not as lunch.

thanks, she seems to be doing better, is up and around. I went back to check and another was perched on top!!

I didnt think they could get out this young! I cut a hole in the lid and some holes for air flow and put the lid on and a screen on top. I want to get the new brooder done for the shed today, I can bring them in a night. Its still in the 40's at night here.

by the way, I let the dog sniff one every day hoping that she would learn, she waggs her tail and goes to check everytime they get rowdy. Being she is a beagle, Im suprised.

My Beagle behaves very simalarly. I have been letting him sniff the chicks (in my hand) and he has been very good. (They aren't quite sure what to make of him yet though) :)
