I was told to be able to tell a roo from a hen at this age all you have to do is look for a black dot on the top of their head, if the spot is there that chick will be a roo, any takers out there for this query?????
 
I wouldn't count on this method - it only applies to certain sex-linked cross breed chickens. Sorry, I can't remember the mix though.
 
Actually, it refers to the Barred varieties.

A Barred Rock chick (pure bred) at hatch. Females have a neat, round white head spot, if any. Roos will have a larger, irregular blotch of white.

Barred Rooster over gold/red hen will produce Black sex links, with females have no head spot and males have a head blotch in white.

You can still mess up, but at least you'll bat around .800
