10 month old male escapee

I have two 10 mos old males and they both escaped Easter Sunday. I was able to catch the more docile of the 2 but the other is still at large. Our area is wooded properties alongside a large pond. We chased him around for 2 hours that day to no avail. My question is this: how far will he wander and short of putting notices in all of the mailboxes (which I did) what else can I do? Would he find his way back? His brother honks for about 15 minutes first thing in the morning but is, otherwise very quiet. Before that, they never made a sound.....very bonded and content all of the time. These are my first peafowl and I'm not sure what to do or what to expect. Any advice would be welcome!

Welcome.. and I am sorry to hear this..

but dont give up hope.. and dont chase.. keep whatever shelter you have open..for him to return/ how long did you have him for??

and lots of treats and food out.. they are such strong fliers that they can go... 5 mile range.. within the first month.. usually.. but yes.. photos.. craigslist..bird forums..etc.. get the word out.. and definitely every neighbor you can.. spread the word about your peacock getting out..

Many times they do come back to where they were use to being.. but sometimes not..... this is one of those.. you never know.. chances he could and chances he couldnt..

Thanks!! We got the two of them as 3 mos old babies in October and they have been penned up until now. My husband lets them out into the yard (their pen is inside a chained link yard for our dog) for short periods if it is sunny out etc.. ....maybe 6 or 7 times since October and they had always migrated up to the deck as they enjoy the slider. They would always return to their pen as they love their shed, without incident. So, they had never left the yard and therefore wouldn't necessarily know how to find it again. I have the word out, made flyers for the mailboxes and posted on Craigslist and a "Lost Bird" website that I found. He's so young; not sure how he is handling himself out there. Hopefully, we will get him back. His brother is literally hugging the mirror in his pen; they were so close. The neighborhood support has been tremendous so I have some hope!

I hope he does come back, it helps that you raised him. I wish you luck I know what it is like to have one peafowl out there who knows were and the other one all lonely in a pen. I hope someone spots him or he comes home. If someone finds him use a big fish landing net to catch him or herd him into a garage and close the door, ect. Don't chase him that will just make him less calm. You want to keep him calm because they can really take off!

hi,its really hard to say,depends on the bird,and thier bond.
i had 3 peacocks,from 2 days old,all were inseperable,and never wondered.
BUT,one day,something spooked them,or they just wanted a change of venue?!!
they all flew off!![i live in a suburban area,neighbours right and left!!]
well,after 8 hours,2 came back,but never saw the other one.
days later,these 2 started calling,and i could here the third in the distance,and although i tried to follow the sound,and also posted flyers,never found him
5 weeks later,a pic turns up on face book,of a peacock scaring patrons of a drive through in mac donalds!!
this is 10 blocks from my house!!
well,i only posted flyers 3 blocks around my house!!
walked the route,and as all yards are fenced,the natural path,was to cross the street,and then the street ends in thier lot!!!
someone called animal control,and he now lives in the LA zoo!!
they are all contected,if kept as young,but if seperated by too much distance,seem to be to scared to risk[being a niegbourhood]trying to return,even if they hear calls.
the 2 i have remaining,seem even more bonded,and i only have a yard,30 x30,with a 4 feet fence,but they seem to have NO desire to leave!!!
they look through it[picket fence],over it,but never jump???!!!
i hope you get responces from your flyers!!
hopefully he is tame enough,so you can get him.
of mine,although,they were aal chicks,only one is SO tame,that i can show im food and then pick hm up!!!!,then,with him in my arms,the other just follows!!!

My two were very bonded and the remaining one was honking at day break for a day or two but has, seemingly, given up. I live in a rural/suburban area where the houses are 1/2 acre apart with conservation land around them and two large ponds on either side of the main road. In hindsight, I realize that it was a mistake to chase him around in the woods as he got totally freaked out. Neither are tame enough to pick up easily. I can brush by them if I am cleaning out their shed and they are comfortable with me as long as I don't reach out for them. I was able to grab his brother because he paused in front of a glass door to look at his reflection; I got lucky. Many of the pond front houses are summer homes so they are mostly empty right now......he could be anywhere along the pond in one of those yards where no one would see him. Yet. The summer folks will be back starting this weekend and I am hoping that that somebody spots him in their yard and calls me.

I am worried about the one that I have in the pen. He is hanging out in the corner of the pen all day and goes into the shed at night; not eating much. I may need to get another; not sure what to do with him! I have been leaving food outside of the pen in case Claude should show up....but I think that the chipmunks are eating it (little rascals).

My husband and I are going to walk the length of the main road (which runs along the big pond) at dusk tomorrow and see if we spot him up on a shed, rooftop or in a tree. I am thinking that he might be easier to see....??

mine too honked for days!!!,but, like yours gave up.

Good news!! I posted an ad on Craigslist and he was spotted by someone in the next town abot 4 miles away. He was hanging around on their back deck looking at himself in the glass door and eating bird food on the ground below their feeder. He seems to be fine; I was able to snag him with a fishing net. we are so relieved. Thank you all for your advice and kind words!
