10 month old RIR still has no comb

Have you discussed this with the seller? I wouldn't assume she had wronged you intentionally, without talking to her first.

What do you mean by "conform?"

I'm sorry you paid prices apparently not in keeping with what you find fair. They aren't purebred. The red pullet is just that. A red pullet. RIR are deep mahogany, almost black in color and have a brick shaped body.

As to why people lie about their birds? Because they can, I guess. If they are happy and healthy? Take joy in that.

I'm sure she's referring to her birds not conforming to industry standards for the breeds she supposedly bought. This seller must not have a clue then if she sold her purebred birds and the two that lived aren't even the breed she said they were. I don't know how this could not be intentional. Just sayin'!! :)

Perhaps the seller herself hadn't a clue. If there's a problem and the buyer doesn't at least discuss it with the seller, how is the seller supposed to remedy it?...or if the seller wasn't aware, discussing it with her could prevent this from happening to other people.

I once hatched a batch of what I was told were black french copper maran chicks not realizing it was not actually that breed...it was not intentional. I didn't know better. The breed was new to me. The buyer e-mailed me, and I was able to NOT sell the rest as what I thought they had been.

My only point was no one should assume it was intentional unless they do the right thing and talk to the seller.

AND as a buyer be aware of what you are actually buying. If you want a specific breed that "conforms" to standards, be aware of what to look for in the chicks. I see it as the responsibility of both, TBH.

By the way, whatever they are, they are beautiful birds. :)

You are not alone. I bought what was supposed to be two RIR's and they are actually red sex links. They are wonderful, big, lovely birds, but they are much lighter in color then my actual RIR that I later purchased. I am not the slightest bit sad though, because the actual RIR is my least friendly bird.

Thanks myhubbycallsme chick!
That's all I'm saying. I am a registered dog breeder, and we have to abide by very strict rules to call our dogs purebred. If I sold a puppy as purebred that wasn't, I can be fined $5000 per dog sold.
Our laws state that animals sold as pure bred, must be just that. I don't know if it works the same with chickens, but it does with live stock.
She advertized them as such, and brought me to all the pens she kept her breeds separarted in. Insisted they were pure. Plus I lost almost all my birds. She must have issues with her stock.. There are others who have had the same experience, but they lost ALL their birds. I'm not sure how a new buyer would know how to tell the difference between a day old buck eye, and a RIR, or that the Ameraucauna isn't actually purebred, looking at day old chicks
I wanted the purebred to know what to expect from my stock. I specifically ordered Ameracaunas because I wanted the blue eggs.
Again...I love the birds that survived. They are beautiful, but I cannot include them in a breeding program because they are a mixed breed. If there were mixed breed chicks, I would sell them accordingly and certainly tell people that they are not pure bred. Most people won't care if they're not planning to breed them. They make perfectly good layers.
I had infact called this woman, and she was nice enough offer to replace the birds, but I don't want to get more sick chicks. The last time I talked to her, they weren't full grown, so i didn't realize what I had yet.
People are serious about their birds. When I'm buying a specific breed of chick, it means I've done my research and have chosen this breed for a reason. I just want to ge what I paid for.
For now I have 3 great layng hens, whatever breed they actually are. I love them, they are friendly. I've bought some really nice chicks from different breeders, and so far they are doing excellent. They look how they should.

Where's the like button!?! Oh wait, that's on Facebook!! :thumbsup

The color is definitely right, but my blue bird has ear tufts and a beard. I know she's at least part Ameracauna. Maybe that's the other part. Who knows.
Thanks for posting!!
