Hi there,
I have a 10 week old olive egger hen who all of a sudden has a large lump/bump on her head. We aren’t new to chicken keeping but this issue is completely new to me. The bump is hard (not squishy). She is acting completely normal and eating and drinking fine. No signs of respiratory or eye health problems. As far as I can tell there isn’t a peck mark or bug bite mark on the bump. The inside of her mouth and surrounding facial area also appear normal. The rest of the flock is all completely fine with no issues as well. Any ideas?

The way her eyelid is pulled up from the swelling, I wonder if it could be a growth or tumor? Is that a pink scratch around 11:30 in the middle picture? I hope it is just a hard swelling from an injury, but I would watch it, and let us know if it grows or gets bigger. Have you had any illness or death in your flock?

Thank you for your reply. I searched the internet crazy and had landed on possible growth but was hoping it was a mild injury that will clear. I think the scratch you’re referring to is a thin vein. No illness or death for a long time. We have 4 older hens that haven’t been exposed to this new flock of babies (12 day old chicks from Meyer - assorted breeds and all female). It just came on so fast. It’s like it wasn’t there and then boom.
