12 wk old pecked badly by our 1 yr old chickens about 4 weeks ago- she somehow got into their pen. Nursed her back to health, her emaciated head is healing nicely with feathers growing in but her right eye only opens 1/2 way. The older/younger girls are seperated, we are leaving for vacation in a week and I want to get her integrated with the other young ones soon. She is badly spoiled by me between hoding her during wound care and up with her at night making sure she ate/drank. She has even been free in our living room while w'ere around and is my baby! I let her out to free range with the young ones and have had the normal peck here or there but she mostly stays off on her own. Today I put her in the enclosure with them. Still a little more pecking. There still is a bare spot on her neck and I'm afraid that they will kill her. Tried to put her in with them at night but she cried at the bottom of the coop while all others were roosting. I opened the door and she ran out. I put her back in the brooder in our basement for the night. She is an ameracuana, the one my 7 yr old paid with his own money!! I know how nature works but dont want it to work for my girls!! Never thought chickens would be such good pets, am attached to all 21 of them! Time is ticking and I think I will ask my mother to take care of her at her house. I just dont want her to get too dependent on us !!! Any ideas would help!!
