100 percent failure

Sorry. I'm not being nasty. I'm just using caps for emphasis as it's easier than highlighting and using italics. I tend to make a mess of those [/i/] things and then have to go back to edit it, and I just find the caps simpler. I'm truly very sorry that you thought I was shouting at you; as that really wasn't my intention. I don't ever shout at anyone, either on the internet or face to face. Sorry.

I was actually going to ask if the article you read on Texas A&M was for chickens or ducks... Those are the humidity levels I was told to try to achieve for my duck eggs

Just thinking "outloud". Hope you try again, and have better luck next time!

On a certain level, what you say makes sense. But, consider your elevation. The higher your elevation, the lower the air pressure, inside and outside the incubator. The lower the air pressure, the faster the liquid in the egg evaporates. At lower air pressure water boils at different temperatures. This is why, when you are baking or canning, you make adjustments to account for it This is the type of thing I mean by local conditions. In theory, the higher your elevation the higher the humidity should be in the incubator, especially during the first 18 days. I expect there are other factors that influence it. I'm sure someone can come up with something different but I'll pick an easy example of local conditions.

Drowning is not a gradual build-up of water in the shell. It is due to not enough of the moisture that started in the shell evaporating. I'm not going to go look it up, but there are charts that tell you how much, either by weight or size of air cell, how much that should be at different stages of incubation.

Since the solvents in the magic marker are more volatile that the water in the egg, those solvents will have long since evaporated before pip or hatch. Those solvents are not going to be around to do any harm that late in the game. Since they evaporate so fast, I really don't think those solvents would penetrate the egg enough to do any harm anyway. But that last is personal opinion. I'll keep using Sharpies to mark hatching eggs.

I am sorry, I thought this discussion was for everybody.. I posted my reply separately so as to not single out anyone.. but somebody decided to single me out and try to debunk every point I tried to make.. I am not going to argue with anybody. I have my opinion, based on experiments, experience, and lots of enquiries and research.

I am happy to know that a "sharpie" works for marking eggs..
If anybody can read and comprehend, I did not single out a particular type of pen.
But I can assure the rest of you that a certain type of marker does have enough staying power to poison a chick thru day 18..
that is more than just my opinion..

I think it was for chickens. I printed off a couple of the guides that RidgeRunner posted links to, and while they all mention other breeds in passing, the details all seem to be about chickens. For example, the chart for keeping a record of your own incubation has days 18-21 marked as lockdown. Duck eggs take quite a bit longer to hatch, don't they? You should go and have a look at the guides, they're really informative.

I always thought duck eggs would need a lot more humidity just because ducks spend a lot of time on the water (not logical I know, LOL!) but then I got a really good book about ducks and geese that says that is a common misconception and waterfowl eggs generally need LESS humidity than chicken eggs. It says waterfowl eggs should lose about 15-16% of their weight through the incubation period. The figure for chicken eggs is 11-14%...

Hi there, can you please tell me what kind of marker this is? I'd sure like to know so I can make sure I don't poison any chicks in the future? That would be useful information for everyone on the forum. Many thanks...
