1984 (every year I make more connections to this book, which is scary)
The Lord of the Rings trilogy
The Green Mile
The Giving Tree (S. Silverstein kid's book) still chokes me up when I read it
The Stand (King) will always be one of my top 5

ETA: And I SO agree that they have to be read, because they're usually butchered in movies...
