Hi, I am hoping to get some feedback on a coop design that I cannot seem to decide on. I currently have 2 coops (each with 20 chickens). I have found a 10x20 shed that I am purchasing to convert to a coop for all 40 birds and to have them closer to the house, I hate that the old coops are far out on the property. My question is for all of you experienced chicken tenders :) If the shed door is centered on one of the 20 ft sides.
How would you do the layout of the 10x20? where would you put roosts? nesting boxes? feed/water area etc..
I appreciate any feedback, TIA!

I want to do the exact same thing for the exact same reason! But I'll be converting a 10 x 10 for 15 chickens and 8 ducks.

I would use the long wall for one big roost, raised up maybe 3 ft, with a poop board under it and a couple of ramps up to it. For that many, I'd likely make a u-shaped roost and poop board. Under the poop board, I'd put the nesting boxes. I have mine low because of my ducks. I'd probably put an isolation pen/brooder under one of the poop boards on the sides.

If your birds don't spend a lot of time in there, I'd either store the feed in there in metal cans, or even install cabinets to store supplies.

I am SOOOOOOO envious!!!

Thanks Aunt Angus! I like the idea of putting in an area for a pen/brooder! I didn't even think of that! Best of luck with your project and thanks again for the feedback/ideas!!

Pictures?
I just moved the doors on my shed to where I wanted them and added another for my access.
Started with this 8'x16' shed.

Centered the doors and cut them down to clear the new extended roof line:

Installed an exterior grade door someone had tossed out for garbage collection to use for my access into the coop.

I used the front 4' for a "chicken free zone" that houses some supplies, the nest boxes and the brooder/maternity ward:

The rest of the space is for the chickens. I ended up with "U" shaped poop boards with the roost centered over them.

You could do a similar layout with your shed.

Is the shed new or....???
Got pics?
Will you need to add roof eaves and windows for ventilation and light?

I suggest you get some graph paper and start sketching ideas out,
make your mistakes on paper rather than in lumber and labor.

Will you have a run too?

Where in this world are you located?
Climate, and time of year, is almost always a factor.
Please add your general geographical location to your profile.
It's easy to do, and then it's always there!

Wow! Thanks for all of the pictures, your coop is awesome! I don't have any photos yet as the shed hasn't been delivered yet. Thanks for all of your ideas and photos!

No photos yet as it hasn't been delivered. I know it has 2 windows on the front (20 ft side) and I was considering adding more. I live in northern Michigan, so cold most of the time.
I am planning to add a run as well and have been thing about ideas for that too! The first coop I made out of a shed 12x12 and there was much I ended up not liking or using when I did it and I feel like this is my chance to make it just how I want and now I'm panicking that I don't know what I want. Hence, asking for advice from all of you :)
And I'm gonna work on getting that geographical area set. Thanks!
