Thank you for joining us at Backyard Chickens. All afternoon I was trying to remember the name of a certain breed of duck and now you popped up and I remember- Mallards. Tah dah!!
We had wild ones several years ago 2 drakes and a hen..They came to our side door and the hen pecked until we opened it and looked out.
Very obviously she expected to be fed/watered.She must have had previous luck pecking on other suburban doors. Not knowing what to feed them I tore some bread into small pieces. We got a kick out of them throwing the bread in the water and then swallowing. I didn't realize that ducks don't product saliva and needed the water to make the bread something they could swallow.
The hen would fly up on our living room picture windowsill and look into the house. She seemed very interested and spent a lot of time looking and visiting the window over a course of a few days. Then she decided to leave and that was that.
Next year we thought they returned but the hen was now looking like a Mallard on steroids.
I found out she was a Ruen, the drakes looked the same (2 of them again) maybe they were mallards too or she couldn't find Ruen males she fancied. Funny thing was the female flew up on the outer windowsill and checked out the living room - as did the hen the year before.
As a tv show used to broadcast "coincidence, or conspiracy," you be the judge. Really did enjoy their visits.
