The first time hatching Cot Quail eggs and got 11 out of 19 eggs with 2 assisting. On 21st day, I could see two eggs were struggling to break the shell. Got on this web site and read how assisting is done. I didn't have a nerve at first to attempt but seeing them trying to break thru, I had to do something about it. The first one was born with eyes wide open unlike earlier ones with film over their eyes but otherwise looked alright. The second one kept flipping around like if it was in pain - it was so hard to watch and had no hope for it to survive. I had to get away from it since it was painful for me to watch the struggle. After 30-min or so later, it stopped moving. An hour or so later, it looked normal. They both are fine now. As to the 8 other eggs, tried breaking the air pocket and poured coconut oil but I could tell some of them developed some but died before able to fully develop and the rest of them did not even show any developments. There is one, tho, if did assist, it may have survived a day earlier.
These chicks are 2-3 days old now and are so cute and many of them let me cuddle them. I do wish to make them pets like some posting indicates they have tamed them. Built a cage and hoping to have them outdoor soon since weather is getting warmer and sunny. I will post some pictures later on to find out what kind they are. The eggs I got are mix of Japanese, Italian, Pearl-Fee and Snowy. 6 chicks have dark stripes most likely Japanese Quails, 1 is creamy with dark strips which could be Italian, 4 are cream colored some brighter than others which I have no idea what they are but maybe Snowy. Hope to find out soon.
